It makes your clothes smell, eyes sting and cooks blackened food of dubious edibleness but campfires are perhaps unique as an insight into how our ancestors lived. Tapping into the feral core of sleeping outdoors, campfires are largely unchanged in the face of technology that has transformed living outdoors in the 21st century .
However, getting the thing going and producing something tasty can be difficult if you haven’t got the proud scouting background of yours truly. Skills such as making tins of baked beans explode may not required by todays glamper, but creating a massive pyre to circle the Cath Kidston blankets around are still in demand.
Follow our simple guide and you’ll be collecting kindling to create a gourmet feast before you can say “Oh sod! The teepees on fire!”

‘I’m going camping this weekend…’ I casually dropped in when asked how I was spending the first bank holiday weekend in May. It provoked a Marmite reaction. Lots of people were in the ‘good luck, you wouldn’t find me pitching a tent, not on your nelly’ camp, while others came over all misty-eyed, clearly nostalgic for treasured memories of ‘the great outdoors, camp fires, self-sufficiency…’ etc.
We were in lovely Le Touquet, which, by the way, is my new favourite recommendation for a quick weekend away. Just 45 miles from Calais, it’s a landscaped treasure on the French coast and brimming with hotels, restaurants and a soft yellow-sand beach.
The first trick was finding a campsite that accepts the humble tent and there aren’t any in Le Touquet - it’s far too sophisticated. There’s people-watching to be done, espresso to be sipped… no time for unpacking and constructing a holiday home with your own bare hands.
So, off to the next beach down it was: Stella Plage… short on glamour but big on leafy campsites. We plumped for the first one we found, where the owners bade us welcome and deftly shoehorned us in between a mobile home and a caravan. For the best part of an hour we felt the glare of curious French holidaymakers as we pitched our tent and tried to look like we knew what we were doing.
At 20 euros a night, it’s the cheapest holiday I’ve had in a long time, and while I’m a long way from turning my back on luxury hotels, I’ll admit a weekend under canvas was, most of the time, pretty good fun. Here are ten things I now know about camping…

now is the time to be looking for cheap deals on camping holidays in France. This time last year we booked our cheap Ferry from Portsmouth to Le Havre with LD lines. We then sorted out our campsite and spent over 2 weeks in the sunshine in France in June for around £200 each (not including food etc).
Shop around and there are some great deals to be found, there are links on this site to help you find them but also search around as companies are promoting offers all the time.

Obviously if you are going to France for your holiday it is very handy to be able to speak some french!
Having some software to help you learn is the best method. I would recommend “Rocket French”, this is available Here. If you go for the download version of the software you can get it for 1/3 the price of the hard copy. For most people however this will be ideal unless you like having everything on CD’s! Best of all the creator offers a 60-day money back guarantee so if you dont like it you can always get your money back!

At the moment one of our favourite ways of getting to France is using the LD Lines Ferry service from Portsmouth to Le Havre. We get the 11pm Ferry from Portsmouth which arrives into Le Havre at 06:15. This timing is ideal for getting some sleep overnight and arriving early the next day for continuing your journey.
This is by no means the fanciest ferry you will ever go on but it is a good size and quite quiet on the overnight journey as almost everyone is sleeping. The price is the biggest benefit though as it is cheaper than travelling on the bigger ferries.
You can visit the LD Lines website here: http://www.ldlines.co.uk/ to find out more information

One essential item that I always take with me when camping in France is Lifesystems Insect Repellent. It is DEET based repellent and works very well. Helps to keep the mosquitos off in the evenings and helps to make your camping experience more enjoyable!

If you are thinking of travelling to Fontainbleau on your holiday for climbing or just to visit this amazing area, I would reccomend you Camp at La musardiere campsite near Milly-la-Forêt. It provides cheap camping with good facilities and a nice swimming pool. The campsite is based in the forest which is great for pitching your tent out of the sun (essential for camping in this part of France as the temperature is usually above 30 degrees in the summer.
We camped here for just over two weeks when we visited the area for Climbing and thoroughly enjoyed are stay, so much that we came back the following year for another two weeks!
